What to do when life changes your financial plan

by
Adam Bykowski

A new job, a new baby, or a move can shift your priorities fast. Here’s how to update your plan without starting over.
Life rarely follows the plan
A financial plan is built on what you know today. Then life happens. A promotion, a marriage, a new child, a job change, or the loss of a loved one can change your goals almost overnight.
That doesn’t mean your plan failed. It means it’s time to revisit it. A good plan is meant to grow and change along with you.
Start with what changed
Before you think about accounts or investments, take a moment to name the change itself. A few simple questions can help:
Has your income gone up, down, or become less predictable?
Has someone new started depending on you?
Have your short-term priorities shifted?
Has the timeline for a big goal, like retirement or buying a home, moved?
Your answers can point to the parts of your plan that need attention first.
Review the basics
Some updates are easy to overlook in the middle of a big change. Beneficiary designations, emergency savings, insurance coverage, and retirement contributions are all worth a fresh look. A small adjustment now may help you avoid a bigger gap later.
A life change is a reason to revisit your plan, not a reason to abandon it.
